Cabgolin - Cabergoline (brand names Dostinex and Cabaser), an ergot derivative, is a potent dopamine receptor agonist on D2 receptors. It also acts on dopamine receptors in lactophilic hypothalamus cells to suppress prolactin production in the pituitary gland. It is frequently used as a second-line agent in the management of prolactinomas when bromocriptine is ineffective.
Cabgolin is used to prevent or stop the production of breast milk. It is also used to treat a condition where the body produces an abnormally high amount of prolactin. Prolactin is a hormone that stimulates breast development and the formation of milk during pregnancy. Cabgolin is also used on its own or together with other medicines to treat Parkinson's Disease. It cannot cure Parkinson's Disease but it can improve the quality of life for people who have the disease.
Indications: Hyperprolactinemic disorders either idiopathic or due to pituitary adenomas.
