Azithromycin is a macrolide antibiotic used for treatment of systemic bacterial infections.When to use
Skin and soft tissue infections, respiratory tract infections, uncomplicated genital infections due to chlamydia trachomatis, uncomplicated gonorrhoea, prophylaxis of disseminated mycobacterium avium complex (mac) infections, granuloma inguinale, salmonella typhi.
How to use
Skin and soft tissue infections, respiratory tract infections
Adults: 500 mg once daily for 3 days. Alternatively, 500 mg as a single dose on the 1st day followed by 250 mg once daily for 4 days.
Children>6 months: 10 mg/kg
Children 15-25 kg: 200 mg
Children 26-35 kg: 300 mg
Children 36-45 kg: 400 mg. Doses to be taken once daily for 3 days.
Uncomplicated genital infections due to chlamydia trachomatis
Adults: 1 gm as a single dose.
Adults: 2 gm as a single dose.
Prophylaxisof disseminated mycobacterium avium complex (MAC) infections
Adults: 1.2 gm once every week. For treatment or secondary prophylaxis: 500 mg once daily with other antimycobacterials.
Children>6 months: 10 mg/kg once daily for 3 days.
Adults: Initially, 1 gm followed by 500 mg daily. Alternatively, 1 gm once a week for at least 3 weeks, until all lesions have completely healed.
Active immunisation against typhoid fever caused by Salmonella typhi
Adult: 500 mg once daily for 7 days.
