Avonex (interferon beta-1a) is made from human proteins. Avonex is a medication manufactured by a biotechnological process from one of the naturally-occurring interferons. It is made up of exactly the same amino acids as the interferon beta found in the human body.
Avonex is in a class of drugs known as immunomodulators, which work by acting on the immune system.
Avonex is used to treat relapsing multiple sclerosis. Avonex may also be used for purposes not listed in this medication guide.
