Atgam - Atgam is a lymphocyte-selective immunosuppressant, prescribed for prevention of organ rejection during transplantation. It is also used in aplastic anemia. Indications: Atgam is a lymphocyte-selective immunosuppressant, prescribed for prevention of organ rejection during transplantation. It is also used in aplastic anemia. Contraindications: Hypersensitivity. Dosage: For organ rejection- Adult- The recommended dose is 10 to 30 mg/kg of body weight daily. Child- The recommended dose is 5 to 25 mg/kg daily. Aplastic Anemia- The recommended dosage regimen is 10 to 20 mg/kg daily for 8 to 14 days.
Usage: It comes as a solution for injection to be administered by healthcare provider into the vein. Precautions: Caution should be exercised in patients with history of any allergy, who are taking other medications, during pregnancy and breastfeeding. It may cause dizziness or lightheadedness, do not drive a car or operate machinery while taking Atgam. Monitor blood cell counts, liver function, and kidney function regularly while taking Atgam. Patient may develop with increased risk of viral disease or a central nervous system disease called Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease; if it is so consult with your doctor.
Side Effects: Gastrointestinal - Diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, rectal fissure and mouth ulcer. Central Nervous System - Headache. Musculoskeletal - Joint pain and back pain. Respiratory - Difficulty in breathing and abnormal breathing sound. Heart - Chest pain and low blood pressure. Skin - Rash, itching and hives. Miscellaneous - Fever, chills, decrease in white blood cells/platelet counts and pain at injection site. Warning: Avoid excess dosage. Storage Conditions: Store it in refrigerator (2° to 8°C).
